World Health Organization Declares African Country Cabo Verde Malaria-Free
Did you know that some countries have successfully eradicated the disease called malaria?
The Republic of Cabo Verde also known as Cape Verde has been declared by world Health Organization (WHO) as malaria-Free. This makes it the third African country joining Algeria and Mauritius and the 43rd in the world to zap the disease.
WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, on Friday, hailed the government and people of Cabo Verde for their unwavering commitment and resilience in their journey to eliminating malaria. He stated that WHO’s certification of Cabo Verde being malaria-free is testament to the power of strategic public health planning, collaboration, and sustained effort to protect and promote health. Cabo Verde's success is the latest in the global fight against malaria, and gives us hope that with existing tools, as well as new ones including vaccines, we can dare to dream of a malaria-free world.
This great achievement was accomplished by several measures including free treatment and testing for all new arrivals as well as systematic surveillance and mapping of mosquito breeding sites throughout the year.
The estimated number of deaths globally in 2021 was 610,000. While in 2022, it stood at 608,000.
